Actually, I sold my scoot to someone earlier this week and I only had one key (after my move many things got "lost"). I told him this and he was going to get a second but he first took a swim in the ocean and...well, I just got a call asking if I had found the second or if I have the metal tag--both a negative from me. He's a good guy and I'd like to help him out but I don't really know what to do. Any thoughts?

I belive you or he will need to take the whole scoot down to a dealre to have a new lock set installed. Could be done at home but all the top front tuperware has to come off and it may take a special torx bit. DaveJ

Hi, Jay,

We had the same problem and I wrote my "solution" here on the forum a while back.

Here it is:
= = = = =

Greetings to All,

As some of you may be aware, I had previously posted a request for information on how to open the trunk when the last key was locked inside.

Well, thanks to several of you I was able to get the trunk open without any damage and... NO key.

We had lost them both.

So we drive to our Suzuki dealer and they wanted more than $300 to change out all three locks (ignition, glove box, gas cap lock).
Sunrise Cycles
1559 E Little Creek Road Norfolk VA 23518
Phone: 757-583-2223 Fax: 757-588-0813

Well I talked to one of their technicians and he suggested that we haul the bike off to the following locksmith:
ACE Locksmith
7802 Merritt St
Norfolk, VA 23513
(757) 587-1463

That is located one block off (south) of East Little Creek Road just west of Military Highway. If you see the WaWa gas station you are about two blocks away.

As the glove box was not locked he did his majik by unscrewing the lock for the glovebox and fitting his trials to that lock.

And while his initial try got the ignition to work it did not open the trunk. Once I advised him that 3/16th of an inch had to be ground off of each shoulder of the key (which he did at no additional cost) the ignition and trunk locks both worked.

Total cost to fit and make a new key: $35.oo
Total cost for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th copy: $3.00 each.
Total time from when we drove up with the bike on a trailer until we departed - about 25 minutes.

Small shop, Master locksmith with a big heart.

Go and have your problem resolved. But do remember to have the edge of the key cut back so it works.

i had this problem with my 650 when purchased. you cannot get a key made, with the security feature on it, without the key tag. but, you can have a locksmith make a key for you that will run everything else. it will be regular price for a locksmith, probably $40 or so. i had to have a whole new lockset, including: glove box lock, ignition (whole thing), and gas cap. it was a pain, but suzuki paid for it. the dealer lost my spare and the key tag. i think it was around $700 for the whole job. sorry for the bad news.............larry

I agree with larry, Stan has got the best solution, even if your glove box is locked, it is a lot cheaper to replace that piece of plastic than an entire key/lock mechanism.

We all learn from our mistakes in life, that's why one of the first things that I always do after buying a new ride is to make a few extra spare keys, very cheap to do with aftermarket spare keys.

Good luck with the repair.

Are you saying I can get another key made that has the security feature? When I got my bike I only got one key so I made copies of it and use only the copies. I'd like to have another key made that has the security feature so I can use it on occasion. I was afraid if I lost the only original I had with the security feature I sould be SOL. What is the "key tag" you are referring to? Any info greatly appreciated.

by what suzuki told me and the dealer, you cannot get another key made with the security feature on the back end of it, without the key tag. they (dealer) lost mine and had to replace everything on my bike that is keyed..........larry

What is the "security feature" to which you are referring? Is that the odd-shaped end that allows the little door to close over the keyhole?

Thanks.
That's it. There is no chip itself in the key like most cars have so that won't start the ignition without it. The security part of our key is purely based on that shutter that can be open/closed by the butt end of our keys.

EXTRA KEY FOUND! Phew. Thanks to all for the great responses. I appreciate your help and concern very much. Now on to a new ride for me...new or used???
Jay
Very good news,..... Run out there and make a few spares....

I'm still confused. Do I have this right? If you take your existing key in to a key maker he can copy it. The key will work but you won't have the security feature, the little hex nut that opens and closes the ignition cover. You mean I can take a key to Wal-Mart and have one made that will work in the ignition?

I think you can take it to any keymaker and have a spare made. It seems to need a little extra shaved off the shoulder so it can reachj the trunk lock feature, but the key and shutter are made as a set so the replacement won't open the shutter over the ignition. If you lose the original security key, I recommend filling the joints around the shutter socket with crazy glue or epoxy so it can never be accidently closed. Not the shutter itself over the ignition, though. You don't want to accidently get anything in the lock.

One of the things I found when checking mine out with another is that any Burgman key will close the lock...but only the key mated to the bike will open it.

So if you lose the keys made for the bike and a "friend" thinks he's doing you a favor by trying his key to close that shutter, you're stuck.

Yes, any competent key maker can make a duplicate of your Burgman key, and in some cases it's necessary to grind the key shoulders back a bit to make it work.
But you will not have the capability to open the shutter. Any tool, even a needlenose pliers or similar will close the shutter, but only a key matched to your bike can open it.
That little plastic covering on the key contains a number of small magnets, and it's the correct alignment of those magnets that allows the shutter to be opened.
Others have posted that even a Suzuki dealer replacement key will not work the shutter, even if you provide that key code.

Most WalMarts won't have the correct keyblank.
A regular locksmith probably will.
An ilco number X241 SUZ18 is the blank
that you need. There is a shorter blank for
motorcycles, but scooters need this longer blank.
Have the locksmith grind the shoulders back at
a 45 degree angle, so you will be able to do the
push-in-and-turn to unlatch the seat.
Mine cost $3 each...I got 2 made.

Hi all,
Im the guy who lost his only key in the Chesapeake Bay after buying a 400 just a few days before. The story turns out well since, thanks to mrm7592s persistance, he found his other key deep in a center console of one of his cars. He and I both felt like a ton of bricks had come off when he called me with the good news. I was looking at a $70 min bill for the locksmith to come out to the park where I had been swimming, or about the same for a towtruck to haul it to the smithy or the Zuki dealer($$$$!!!). After picking up the second key from mrm, I IMMEDIATELY took my newfound treasure to Ace Locksmiths in Norfolk, VA. They made me 3 duplicates for only $3 each. You were right; the shoulders of each had to be ground off to make it possible for any of the "push" functions to work. I have the original key for the "trap door" lockout feature, but Ill only use that now if I go into NYC and park in a dark alley. Thanks to all for the helpful info and especially to mrm7592s help.

I have owned three Burgman scooters. I have never used the Ignition key shutter on anyone of them. I use graphite on the lock cylinder, and that does the tick of keeping the ignition working. I've had too many people tell me that the shutter will help keep the dirt and rain out of the ignition, ad others tell me the dirt gets in anyway, and that's the crap that causes the shutter to stick in the closed position even with the key. If the shutter is open you can get the key to work. :D
