Kuryakyn Grips, WITH PICTURES!!

Postby aviator77 » Tue Dec 27, 2005 14:54 14

Like many others, I cannot stand the small diameter stock grips on the Burgman. They are horrible. They make my hands cramp, especially when I am wearing gloves. This Christmas I got my new Kuryakyn ISO grips. You want the universal grips for 7/8" bars. They are the same for the 400 and the 650. This upgrade is TOO EASY and inexpensive not to do!!!

First take the weights off of both ends. You just need a phillips screwdriver for this. Then remove the old grips starting with the left one. I stole an idea from another post to use an aircompressor to unstick the glue. Just stick the end of the nozzle far up between the bar and the grip and "inflate." It will loosen the grip and it will slide right off. If you don't want to keep the old ones and don't want to mess the air compressor, just cut the darn things off. Straight cutters (dikes) work good.

Image

Then use a degreaser and a rag to remove the old glue. I used carb cleaner and it worked great without leaving any oily residue to clean up. The left grip wasn't as tight as I liked it to be so I used electrical tape to tighten the fit up and it worked great.

Image

Position the grip where you want it on the bar WITHOUT GLUE considering where your fingers will rest on the rubber pads. The rubber pads should rest under your palms and under your fingers. If you match the right to the left while sitting parked they will not fit the same once you have the throttle twisted going down the road, but they will look good matched. If you want all comfort then position the throttle grip where it is most comfortable as it would be twisted for the speed you cruise at. I went for looks and made mine match when parked.

Apply the glue on the distal third of the bar and slide on the grip. Don't be too slow sliding on the grip because the glue sets up fast and don't use too much glue or it will make a mess! I would say that about half of the supplied tube is plenty. Your done with left side, now move over to the right!

For the throttle side, remove the old grip as described above. Then you will have to do some cutting to the plastic in order for the grip to fit correctly. I used a cutting tool. A dremel with a cutting wheel would probably work great too.

Image
Cut away the lip on the distal end.

Image
Cut away the larger lip, but leave the inner small one.

Image

Image

Slide on your new grip using the glue as before and you are done!! TOO EASY!!!

Image

This thing took me about 20 minutes from beginning to end. These grips are great and I do not notice any increase in vibration from having lost the weights. The new grips do weigh a lot more then the stock rubber grips so that might be the reason you won't notice any increase in vibration. The hand cramps are GONE!

Thanks for the excellent pics. A couple questions, if you don't mind.

Did the grips come with any instructions, or did you figure it all out on your own? I'm asking mostly in regard to the throttle grip- were you instructed on where/how to cut, or did you figure it out on your own?

It appears that you had to put a taper/bevel on the outside end of the plastic sleeve, then also cut away the outer diameter of the plastic flange, and possibly bevel that end as well? Not sure if I followed correctly, so if you could correct me, I'd appreciate it.

Those grips sure like really nice.

TIA

The grips did come with instructions but they are not specific to the Burgman of course. So it did not instruct me to cut away any of the plastic sleeve. There was maybe a slight bevel cut out of the distal end of the throttle sleeve, but it is not necessary. As long as that lip is cut down flush with the rest of the sleeve. You just need to cut deep enough where it is flush. On the other end there is a small lip that you do not want to cut away. This will give you a good stopping point when you slide on the new grip and help keep any glue from getting too close to the throttle cable housing and gluing the sleeve to it.

Outstanding Pics!! Are the stock grips shorter then the new ones? If so, how did you fill the gap to prevent the rubber from collapsing? I'd love to do the same to my Majesty, however the grips are less than 5" long, so the rubber would collapse. :-(

The stock grips on the Burg are shorter by about half an inch. There is a plastic tube/insert that comes with the kit which you can cut to the length you need and insert it into the grip. The sole purpose of this is to keep the rubber from collapsing inside. So now you don't have an excuse. Go get you some new grips!

Can be had for $39.95 plus $8 shipping on Ebay, offered by a cycle dealer, Eastern Performance Cycles. The $39.95 is a buy now price.

Still several pair left, I went ahead and ordered some for myself.

No need for jealousy. I think there are still several pairs of the $38 grips selling on Ebay. For that price, you can't go wrong.

I went with the cheap foam grips from the sport bike shop. They weigh the same as the Kury. I didn't want all the chrome. I still ended up with a little chrome but not the whole grip. That and I'm on the cheap side. Paid $9.99 for them. Haven't gone on a long trip but will this weekend. Around the block they seem fine. Much better than the tiny stock. Now I need a trottle rocker.

For 5 bonus points:

But, Leslie, do you know WHY it should be put on the distal third and not the proximal third? Think about it. 8)

Owning a Majesty instead of a Burger, I can only surmise from logic:
As one slides the grip on, it will be "shoving" some of the glue placed on the distal end and transferring it to the proximal end. (In effect, smearing). As the grip smears the glue, the quantity of glue being shoved by the proximal end of the grip decreases (glue is being deposited along the way). If glue already exists on the proximal end of the throttle tube, it too will be shoved in a manner similar to a snow plow. Anything more than a minimal amount of glue at the proximal end of the grip when it reaches the proximal end of the throttle tube raises the risk that the glue will be pushed to the end, thus gluing the throttle tube, making for a VERY bad day.

Do I get the points?? :blob2:

Girl, I have trouble putting a name to the face I see in the mirror every morning.

All I found so far is the abstract. I'll have to dig a little deeper for the 4 parts, but that (and things you've written here) have already impressed me. Now I'm wondering if I really managed to keep a chapter ahead of you in my classes? :D :D :D :D

Kurakyn grips

Postby hacklaw » Sun Jun 10, 2007 20:30 20

I am a new '06 650 owner for the last month. I installed the Kurakyn grips today following your directions. I can't believe how easy it was. Your coaching was exactly on point. I would encourage anyone else to follow exactly the same procedure. Your posting made my work a "piece-of-cake". Thanks so much
