nice 2004 Burgman 650 for sale in Texas

It's time for my dad to part with his Black 2004 650, and he would like it to have a new home with a Burgman enthusiast.

This scooter is in very good condition. It has been parked in a closed garage since new.
It does have a few scratches along the left side. These were caused when it fell over in the driveway, not while being ridden. See pics.
This will be a cash only transaction with no delivery. You have to come to us.
Also, due to the special nature of these machines, we are not really comfortable with test rides. SO we would prefer to sell to someone who is familiar with them. (Which is why I'm posting this here ) Of course you will get to hear it run.

Purchased new from Stubbs Cycles on April 1, 2004.
8880 miles - 90% of the miles have been on a highway at about 60 mph.
Extras: GIVI windshield, Throttle lock, and bungee hooks.
Maintenance according Owners Manual - 600 mile serv:4/22/04; 4,000 mile serv:12/01/05; 8,000 mile serv:10/10/07
No other service and no repairs have been necessary.
Next scheduled full service at 12,000 miles
State license was paid and inspection was performed in March 2012.
Tires are original but at last inspection were said to have about 2K miles left on them.

You are showing some damage to the side, I would be concerned about that. An explanation would be helpful.

No offense, but test rides are the only way to judge a bikes running condition. I was looking about a month ago at a cheap Piaggio BV250 I think it was... - after getting it up to 60mph and only 1mile on the fwy I got off and took some side streets and the bike began to overheat. By the time I returned the bike after a 10 minute test ride I didn't even make an offer. I later talked to his dealer where he got it serviced and the dealer confirmed he arrived with a smoking bike and refused to pay for the repairs accusing the dealer of not doing their job- despite the earlier repair was unrelated (confirming my suspicion of the cooling system) You can tell a serious buyer when you meet them- but test rides are a matter of trust that seals the deal between buyer and seller.

As somone who's looking to pick up a 650, no test ride = NO DEAL
That commercial on TV is funny, but reality is I'd never buy something w/out testing it 1st (& no holding onto

If the potential buyer was a fellow member on BUSA, I would have no problem offering a ride, but the understanding goes "you wreck it, you buy it". Since you were not the owner nor the rider, you do not understand the friendship many of us have. If anyone calls about it, I would find out if they are a member here.

On a side note, one obstacle could be the fact that the last service was in 2007 and the bike has had only 800 miles since then. This would be an issue for me. A potential buyer may want a discount as the first thing will be going to the dealer and get the fluids changed. If you go ahead and have this done, you probably would not get any of that back in the sale.

I'd like to present something for buyers to consider as someone who went through the anxiety of finding a buyer for their Burgman last year.

First, as far as anyone being a member of BurgmanUSA proving that they are a great person...well, I just did a sort on the Member list (click on the column heading) and went to page 90 before I found members who had made a single post. It took 126 pages of members before I got to those who have actually made more than one post to introduce themselves. It took 245 pages to get to those who have made 50 posts. There's nothing wrong with lurking, but it doesn't prove anything about them being part of the "family" unless they are active members that I know what their background is...so just being a member wouldn't prove anything to me.

As far as the seller holding the money...well, the seller is taking a lot of risk. Even if you've ridden motorcycles for 20 years...as soon as you pull in the clutch lever...opps!...oh!, that's a brake lever. Muscle memory is hard to overcome.

I gave one test ride, and that was in a parking lot. I was very nervous. The couple who bought the Burgman actually only sat on it and listened to the engine run. It was to be the wife's bike, but while she had an endorsement, she didn't have much experience. I wouldn't let her ride it, but she could sit on it all she wanted. The husband had a lot of experience with motorcycles, and I'd be willing to let him ride it, but he didn't care to. I think he knew that if it sounds good on the centerstand and he could see me ride it to and from our public meeting place, it was a fair risk to take.

There are enough people in the world who would take the bike for the test ride, and if they dumped it say something like, "I guess this isn't really what I wanted. Sorry for what happened." And leave you with a couple thousand dollars of repairs to make in damaged tupperware. And some people aren't even interested in buying...they just want a joy ride. That would make the loss even worse.

It's not an easy position to be in...either as a buyer...or as a seller.

I recently bought a 2006 Burgman 650 Executive with 3,100 miles from a member on this board. He had posted pictures and a description. I also looked into a little abit about him and decided that I trusted him. I'm in Chicago and I had to fly to DC to buy his bike, so I had made a substantial investment in being earnest. He had picked me up at the Baltimore-Washington airport and driven me to the bike, so I could see it/buy it. He knew I should test drive it and that I was earnest, so he took a $500.00 deposit and let me take it for a ride. The funny thing is that I was worried about getting lost and not finding my way back to his house so I only rode it about a mile and a half. I could tell that the bike was well kept and like new and we closed the deal. In the next two days I rode it home from DC by way of a somewhat meandering route and I was the guy that stopped on a Sunday evening and bought the Burgman seat in Cincinnati from Cary (Burgmanseats.com). The bike now has 4,600 miles and has run perfectly. I do enjoy both the bike and Cary's seat.

I think when shopping for a used bike, the buyer has to measure both the bike and the honesty of the person selling it. The only way to measure that part is to talk to the person. I agree that it is a scary notion to be selling a bike, but it is also a scary notion to be coming with cash to buy a bike. My business partner looked at me the day beofre I went to buy the bike and said your going with the cash, how do you know that this guy won't rob you? My seller told me that his wife said you're bringing this guy to our house that you never met, how do you know he won't rob us. I'd say that there are ways to measure the sincerity of sellers and buyers.

This particular used Burgman, while low in miles is going to need tires soon, fluids changed (my seller had changed the fluids on a regular basis even though they had not put many miles on the bike) and my bike had 5,000 miles more life in the tires. The diffference in the tires is worth about $200.00. The deferred maintenance with the fluids is worth about $200.00. Then the bike I bought is a 2006 not a 2004 and it is an Executive. On the other hand I paid $4,500.00 and this seller is asking for a bunch less. Also I wouldn't have flown from Chicago to DC to buy a bike if I didn't think it was a very good deal.
