I plan on going over the '06 400 I've just purchased, oil changes, plug change, air filter, checking valves, etc., after I receive my service manual in the mail. In addition to the manual will I need any "special" tools to complete the job? Tools that may need to purchase from my Suzuki dealer? I will feel much better about this new ride after I have gone over everything, well not everything, I plan to check the belt at a later time, it only has 5,700 miles on it. Thanks for the information.

To do normal maintenance like oil, plugs, filter and valves you don't need any special tools.
When it comes time to change the belt you will need a special tool to hold the pulley while you remove the retaining nut. Suzuki sells one but a number of folks made their own. In place of that others have used either a pneumatic or electric impact wrench to remove the nut without having to hold the pulley. That is how I did mine. If you need to change the clutch you will need a rather large socket to remove the retaining nut on it. I don't remember the exact size but for some reason 42 mm sticks in my head. As of yet I have not had to change out the clutch on mine so I have not acquired one of those.

Hi NSPaul
Perhaps you might consider a torque wrench or two for the belt, clutch assembly, motor work and your wheels, that is if you don't already have same.
This little bike keeps surprising me, in a good way!

Thanks for the info, one reason I asked was I saw in the servie manual they specify a special tool for the spark plug removal, but will a normal plug socket work?

Sometimes it helps to have a thin-walled socket to remove the plug, but usually don't need it. Did your scoot come with a toolkit, there should be a plug wrench in it.

I use the spark plug socket that came in the set of tools made by the Cresent company that I bought some years ago with a short extension. It's nothing special, just a spark plug socket like you will find in many socket sets.

That looks like it makes it so easy. Would it be possible for you to show another photo with a ruler alongside so we can see the dimensions? That way I can try to fabricate one myself. Specifically the spacing between the tangs and the width of the tangs themselves.
