I have a 3/4 open face helmet and a medium size Clearview windsheild. No problem with noise and I ear the music from my speaker a 70 mph with open visor.
But, if I close the visor, I have noise and the music is harder to ear

Look for "noise-isolating" earbuds on Amazon.

If i don't close the visor at speed it odds on favourite i either get a bug in the mush....and usually a big one...or muck in the eye! now let me thing which is most important...smack in face with bee or no music! Seriously i can here over the screen....bu the noise has to be way up to here music....although i will say that i bet years of working without ear defenders in a building firm has probably deadened the quality of my listening! as noise isolating do you have any recommendations? I remember somewhere on a thread here some one had used the ear putty stuff and moulded ear buds into the putty to make a pair of earphones

You might install some good helmet speakers. I use earplugs to cut down noise and yet can still hear music and voices via phone or intercom.

I am still using these: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=48849&p=452425&hilit I can still hear the noise of traffic and the engine without cranking the volumn up to "DROWN" out the noise. A review: http://www.earphonesolutions.com/vvire.html Amazon: run from $11.99 (HOT PINK) to over $74.99 USD depending on color. My ears can not tell colors and with a helmut on, no one else can tell the color. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0018M ... Get a aftermarket windscreen. You will hear much better.

If you use ear buds and have to crank up the volume to overcome the wind noise You're flirting with going deaf in time. Have you ever noticed kids playing their music louder and louder. It's because they have already damaged their ability to hear.

The differance between "In the Ear" Buds (ITE) and "Over the Ear" (OTE) headphones is night and day. Most ITE are the noise reduction type with the speakers off. So when you turn the speakers on you dont need to crank it up to drown out the ambent noise. But OTE headphones lay over the ear opening and do little to block ambent noise so you must crank it up to drown out the noise. Helmut speakers are about the same as OTE headphones.

+1 The "noise reduction" part of the name is the important part. Just having earbuds like those given away with most MP3 players, is like having the OTE headphones Dave wrote about. But a "noise reduction" earbud is much like a earplug. Some noise reduction earbuds even list the db attenuation in their specs or the product's homepage. With the outside noise blocked off somewhat, music is piped in at a low level to the ear. The volume level is of course, our choice. But you don't have to jack up the volume to hear your music. I don't try to listen to the music (and traffic reports) loud enough to get great fidelity. I turn it up enough to listen to it, but with the volume low enough to not drown out the noise of traffic around me totally. We need "situation awareness" to use a fighter pilot term. Chris

A 3/4 helmet with a long "ball-cap bill" will reduce noise substantially. I've used a Fulmer AF 155 (discontinued) with some success. The drawback is that the helmet tends to try to pivot forward on your head while riding.
