I'm sure you'll be paying a premium for it. None of that stuff is free on a BMW.

And factory NAV is about the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. I like to keep my vehicles a long time 10+ years. Yeah, that's exactly what I want - a not-the-nicest NAV in my dash that's more than 5 years old Wonder if I can use the flat screen to put post-it notes on later...

I'd be ok with factory nav if it included lifetime updates. Otherwise I really seriously do not want it, will not pay for it at all.
On a side note, weird that I get email notifications that this thread was updated but my previous post must have been deleted. That post I made was likely a year ago. Cannot imagine what I could have said in a thread like this that was considered so negative that a mod deleted it. I do not subscribe to threads I don't post in. Wouldn't be the first deleted post with no reason.

Rode in a 6 year old Lexus the other day. It had built in NAV. What a piece of junk. It "worked", but it was slow, the touch screen was imprecise, the display was of poor resolution and the voice was robotic. OTOH, my wife's 1490LMT, bought 2 years ago, is much nicer.
I'd rather have an on-dash unit to replace every so often. They're relatively inexpensive. The price of NAV option in a car typically is much greater than what the actual unit is worth OR WAAaaayyy more than the cost of an external unit.
I feel the same way about the new funky radios. Just give me an external source jack.
A car is trying to be too much these days. I extend that thinking to a bike.

A bit of thread drift but here we go. Any integrated satnav in an automobile is neat to look at and has no trail of wires. Leaving those advantages aside, it will be expensive, yesterday's technology and expensive to upgrade maps. For the price of a map update you could go out and buy the very latest Garmin safe in the knowledge it is today's technology and has up to date maps.

I don't think it's thread drift at all, NormanB. It's one of the specific reasons the OP stated was making him "jump ship."
