Well the air filter is the majority of the time....

Postby spiff717 » Thu Mar 29, 2012 8:08 08

Okay, rarely am I at a loss for words. I mean, I am not the guy to just says something because he has to say something. But I speak what I am thinking, with tact, strength and all the other good leadership traits I have learned in the military. That said,

I turned my bike in for maintenance yesterday. For the 11,000 mile service. The tech called back and said would it be okay to keep it for a while since they didn't have the air filter in stock. I said, no it wouldn't. You said you had all the parts and it would be ready tomorrow. Blah blah blah.

The tech said, everyone, get ready and (cue Space Odyssey music.) "The air filter replacement is a majority of the time on this service and is a tricky job. After our guys spent the time removing it, they realized we didn't have the part. So it would take allot longer to put everything back and then have to do it all over again." (End Space Odyssey) music.

I swear I looked like that baby on the E-Trade commercial doing his "shocked face."

I am not sure I would like the response of the tech, The 650 air filter change is about a 10 minute job and not a big deal. Unless you ride in very dusty conditions, I would want to look at the air filter as it is probably not dirty enough to cause any issues with performance or fuel economy.

That tech is full of you know what! It's not a hard job and the filter rarely needs more then a gentle blowing out. My original filter is still in at 20k. I might change it out next service just for piece of mind, because we have had unusually high pollen counts this spring.

Their claim is pure BS, changing out the filter is a trivial task as like John and Ken said. Even a complete newbie can do it in just a few minutes. Sounds like they didn't get to it and are looking for an excuse as to why it wasn't ready.

Cut to real story, they broke something working on the bike because they didn't know how to work on it and it will take a day to get/replace the part they broke!

I pulled the air filter myself. Took me five minutes. If that. It was just where he tried to make it more than it was and apparently assumed I was an idiot. Until I gave him a block of instruction on how to remove said filter, time elapsed and SOP for replacing. All thanks to Ledude's videos and everything I have learned on here.

I just thought it wise and reinforcing to post my interaction. A maint plan came with the unit, and has one more left after this. Trying to get ready for the SCR. After that, I am going full on wrenching, where the health will allow.

The idea of "they broke something, " could be true. You never know what they are doing and if they did what they said they did.

Gotta throw my 2 cents in here also. This tech is just plain WRONG and I'd let him know rather quickly and in "not so nice" language. I'm a klutz around anything involving engines or motors but I do change my own air filter. It's probably the easiest service you can do yourself.

Easy yes.

I had 49000 mileson mine and finallyy changed it. Cleaned it up a coupletimes during the 49000 miles. It was looking pretty bad (visual) and I do some gravel roads once in awhile.

Can't tell much difference in performance before or after. Still get around 55 to 57 mpg based on oddometer.

By the way -- the oddometer seems to be close to the GPS on miiles traveled even though the speed is off 6% (that 6% is with a car tire 165/60/14).

Padding the bill 100% IMHO. That is a place we all need to avoid. Either their crooks or totally incompetent and should not be working on a Burgman, let alone any other bike.

Got it back and it seems okay. I don't see any new parts or replacements or cracks. The brakes are a little weird sounding but maybe normal. I can't really fault them for not having the filter, I don't think they have that many that they service. This one had been sitting on the floor for sometime I know. They let it go for a steal and with a maintenance plan on top.

It was just the excuse of how it was a hard time to get the air filter out, etc etc...The total on the sheet would have came to 268.00 had I had to come out of pocket. For an 11500 mile service.

I am not ruling out anything that might have happened. And they are a long way from my house to get it there so after the plan I will be moving on.
