Good idea about the protective gear. So in the end the little scooter guy is fast but not too smart.

While I don't condone the lack of protective equipment and the practice of crossing the center in blind corners, you have to admit he rides that Vespa like a raped ape.

A popular saying in dualsport circles is; "It takes 12 HP to tour the world -- the rest is wheelspin..."

Another saying I have seen here that applies is; "It's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow."

A few months back I and a couple of my 650 buddies rode with a group of vespa riders on what they called the "Three Peaks Challenge". Idea being to ride to the top of the three highest peaks in the SF Bay area in one day and cover about 200 iles doing it. We had the the HP, top speed and acceleration advantage, but damn if they couldn't out run us in the twisties most of the time. Didn't hurt that they all seemed to ride like they were immortal but still had a death wish.

The other day I was on my Vstar 1300, going thru town. I heard this noise comming up behind me, it wasn't a car, it wasn't a motorcyle...when it zipped passed me, I realised it was a little scooter, I would guess a Yamaha Vino 125. At first I was like Uh UH! Then I realised that stupid comes ins shapes, sizes & CCs. I was doing speed limit (30), clearly he was doing, at least double the speed limit (or as close to it as he could). Had on TShirt, shorts, tennis shoes & no helmet. SO, that would have made a great video, but he's still an idiot.

By the way, I didn't chase down to prove I could.

I didn't see any speed limits in that video. The center line was dotted the whole way too. So, technically, no laws were broken...

I still think it's a bit foolhardy to ride like that with only a helmet, and cross over center in the corners.

No one doubts larger displacement wins in a straight line (both engines normally aspirated), but when the going gets twisty, it's not so clear-cut...

I went on a ride with small scooters & they could indeed outrun me in the twisties. Caught back up easily at any straight shot but in the tight turns they could go faster.

And who cares if this scooter is faster than that one or that motorcycle... Maybe this is old fart talking but I ride for the enjoyment of the ride... If I want to go fast,,, I will drag the Hayabusa out to the strip and run the quarter mile... I could care less who gets through the twisties first... but that is just my 2 cents worth...

I did that same ride with that group of guys a few years ago. There are some really skilled riders in that group. And yes, they attack the twisties with light nimble bikes and most of them wear loads of protective gear. It was a long day to make it up and down all three peaks of the Bay Area, but very fun. We even had a 50cc Honda Ruckus with us on our ride. It was fun riding over a toll bridge with him in a big group with him safely in the middle.

And I DO feel that I can ride the twisties faster and with cleaner lines on my Vespa GT200 than I can on my Burgman 650.
