brake lever interlock not working

Postby mqracing3 » Sun May 06, 2012 23:06 23

The left side brake lever--- which I usually use (squeeze in) to start the bike has quit working. So for now I am using the right brake lever and the bike is starting.

How do I go about fixing the left side brake lever interlock? Anyone have the part number I would need and how to change it?

Many thanks.

He means the rear brake lever brake light switch isn't working properly or at all and it's not completing the starter circuit when he pulls the lever and presses the starter button. It a no go on that switch for engine starting. The only way I would suggest it to replace the brake light switch on that side. It's the safest way. I've just had both brake light switches on my brand new 2012 400zABS replaced under a warranty recall due to the potential for these switches to fail in heavy traffic. Only affected about 442 bikes but was potentially lethal as you brake lights don't work if they fail and you can't start the engine (without bypassing the switch) once you have turned off the engine.

Thanks for the explanation ( in plain English!) I thought that the OP thought that the front & rear brakes were linked....!!

I had the same problem a year or so ago.

Go to whomever microfich and ID the little electrical switch that you need to replace. LEFT is DIFFERENT than RIGHT part numbers. Order it. Get it.

2 small screws hold it on, unscrew, switch drops out where you see the electrical connectors to the scoot electrical harness, disconnect, new switch, reconnect (does not matter the order since it is a DC circuit closed / open switch), position, 2 screws back in, done.

Initial swap took about 20 minutes and I take pictures of everything so if I forget something I have a picture of the way it WAS.

Very easy job.

At least the right brake lever would make contact as a backup.

Just remember that if it is not working to start the bike it is not working to turn on the brake lights either so pull in your right brake lever whenever you slow down until you can get it fixed.

There's a Suzuki recall for this issue, but I think it only covers the 2012 model.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I have to dig out my service manual and find out how to locate, fish out and change this part.

It is an intermittent problem--- sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. In the cases where the left brake lever doesn't allow the engine to start I pull in the right lever and we're off to the races.

From the safety points several posters mentioned--- I almost always use both brake levers while riding. And I pay attention to who is behind me and etc.

I take it no one else has had this problem on an earlier Burg 400 (like K7, K8, K9, etc).

I still love my Burgman 400 to pieces... that won't change

Perhaps the left brake lever electrical switch can be fixed (since the problem is intermittent) by liberally spraying some electrical contact cleaner onto the switch.??

I saw a recall some place for the brake switch. Check with Suzuki for the recall and your brake lights are not working.
