Tupperware Issue

Postby Bergy45 » Fri Jun 01, 2012 16:56 16

Somehow I did it. Today I had the "Tupperware" covering the handlebars off. I do not remember any issues in taking it off, but when I went to reinsall it, I found that the tab on the left side for the nylon pop rivets was broken off!!!..For now I used a tie wrap to secure that side, but need a permanent solution. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Burgy45, you can try to mend it by using some large BLACK wireties and a soldering iron/gun. If you have the broken off tab even better.

Align the tab with the main peice, heat the joint between the two peices, lift the tip of the gun and put the end of the wiretie in and then put the tip of the gun back in to melt the three together.

If you lost the tab, you can recraft one using the wireties but its a bit harder.

There are a bunch of tutorials on youtube for plastic welding using the ties and soldering iron or gun that Chet mentioned. Seems like an inexpensive fix. Good luck.

plastic welding using the ties

DAVE said that  not Chet.

The ties are make of nylon. The Tupperware is ABS (white plumbing pipe) but it would work. if he has the part that broke off that would be a great idea, sure beats paying out a lot of money. Might be able to make the part stronger too.

I've used the soldering iron and wire tie method with a piece of wire as a reinforcement and it works.

Some others have said they have used ABS plumbing pipe cement to reattach broken pieces. Not sure how you could reinforce the joint using that method though unless you used a scrap piece of ABS plastic to glue across the joint.

To give you an idea how easy it is I took a piece of ABS 2 1/2" diameter pipe cut it in half. Than put it back together again by welding with a soldering iron and it was air tight.
