Wellnut query

Postby GDV » Mon Apr 26, 2010 10:56 10

Hi there!

Recently decided to put the smaller windscreen onto the Burgie for the winter months - rain sitting on the tall screen creates an unsafe riding situtaion.

The original four wellnuts holding the screen in place are looking a bit sad, so I ordered some new ones from the local Suzuki agent.

I've a '03 650 Burgman.

Part number of wellnut: 09159-0545 - exepensive gadgets!

In this post viewtopic.php?f=4&t=36853&p=342104&hilit=wellnut&sid=57f47d2b2c82261160a2b043cb7d48f0#p342104 about halfway down the author very kindly put a picture up of his wellnut. The original wellnuts off my bike look the same with a bulge in the body of the nut about 5mm up from the bottom.

The new wellnuts look nothing like this! They're completely cylindrical.

My query: will the new wellnuts also develop this bulge, which I guess helps to hold the windscreen in place on the bracket, or is the wellnut with the bulge a special Burgman part?

Thanks for any clues!

Yes, the wellnuts will bulge out when you tighten them down.

The ones initially installed on your burgman were at one point in time perfect cylinders, but when tightened down, the bulge outward, thus acting as the holding for for the windshield. Its when they sit in this position over time, the bulge they get never comes back out.

For future reference, lots of hardware and autopart stores carry wellnuts and you can get them a lot cheaper than the Suzuki dealer price.

you can buy those at most hardwar stores for around $1.00... not sure what Suzuki charges for them... you may need to replace the bolts if you can't find an exact match for the old ones...

GDV, and you can use large Fender washers to shim the windshild to your liking too. If the shield is a bit too tall, put 1 or 2 each fender under the bottom of the shield where the bolts go thru inbetween the shield and the frame. This rotates the top of the shield back and down some. If you want to rotate the top up and forward, put the washers under the top two bolt holes.

You can compond this by putting washers under the mounting frame inbetween the mounting frame and the bikes mount too.

I used Stainless Steel fender washers.
