Excellent job on this how to. I am a biker/wrench for 40+ years. Just picked up a 2004 Burgman 400 with 2800 miles on it yesterday. No owner manual was included. I ordered one today, but already changed the oil and did not realize there is a filter. My case is marked 1900ml, so I assume it is 2 qts of 10W40 oil. How are you supposed to check the dipstick?? with the bike on the sidestand or straight up on the centerstand?? Also was going to change the gear oil just on general principles. I was told 80W90 gear oil 6oz's is required. I think I found a drain plug that has a torx or allen head, but I have no idea where to fill the gearbox. Also, what spark plug and gap should I use. Bike runs fine but just want to treat it right. Awesome Forum! thnks.lowbuck

Guys, in my own opinion, i don't think you have to replace those two O-rings, they are made of durable type of rubber., i had 4 all changes already and never replaces my O-rings, i examine them but still in A1 condition. in these hard times ,we have to be wise. ,i actually have two oil filter that i interchange everytime i do oil change.,,after i remove the older filter, i clean it very well then dry it out and keep it inside a zip lock for future re-installment. that way i can save some money. / another good investment is the "magnetic oil plug".(google it). you can use it over and over and over again.

That's the light location. But it'll be very apparent when it's lit up. Example:
Bill '03 Burgman 400 in blue '03 Burgman 400 in silver (rebuilt) "Yes, I ride it all year round. No, I'm not insane. I'm poor. With insane, you get free room and board."

What is the thinking of those as to how many miles dino oil should be run in a 400 before switching to a synthetic?

Do you replace the oil filter every third oil change, as manual says? It seems too seldom to me.

Hi some questions needing answers i will answer. The OEM O rings should be Viton which can stand high temperature and they only need changing if distorted or damaged in any way such as nicks, I find dealers buy cheap nitrile o rings which will do the job but will require regular replacement due to hardening from heat in fact this is a sure indicator to change your O rings even if they look ok. Oil level is checked with bike on centre stand. oil filter drain plug tension is 23 N-m or 16.5 Lb -ft. oil filter cap bolts 10 N-m or 7 Lb-ft.

I concur. Your write up and pictures made this a very simple task to perform. Especially since I couldn't find the oil filter without the pics.

Question..... I'm almost due to change my oil... I've heard it's need to be filled on the sidestand and level to be accurate. If this is true... Your short by about 3/4 of a quart... Please let me know which is correct ... I don't have a manual... What's the oil capacity for a 2008 burg 400 ? Thanks for your time.

Well to answer my own question... It says 1200ml on the oil case!! Duh !! I'm assuming a center stand oil fill.
