Too bad she didn't include anything about covering the legs. In which case, she's MTGATT.

She said wear full length abrasion resistant pants. Right after that she said wear an abrasion resistant jacket. Sounds like she put the same weight on protecting the legs as the upper body to me.

I saw something from England about a year ago that showed the areas of the body damaged in a crash. The legs actually got a higher percentage than the arms or upper torso.
Every time I read her story, I'm riveted to the words. The thought of being ripped off by the wind force and sent tumbling down the road...well, its not pretty. She's lucky. Many who would say all the gear is not needed would not have survived to tell the tale and pass along some much needed words of wisdom.
"I knew I would never again ride without my gear. Even on a hot day and a short trip, my helmet would always be on my head and I would make sure it was functioning properly. ...I have conquered the only fear that kept me from riding and I will never put myself in the same position to receive such injuries as I have lived through this past year. I stress the importance of wearing full gear to each and every person I ride with, talk to, or even who happens to read my story. I believe that my experiences are a lesson to every type of rider or passenger. I would never wish the pain I felt and still feel today upon anyone in this world. It is completely avoidable with a few extra layers, and I can’t say it enough: it is undeniably worth it to gear up."

Adherence to the ATGATT principle saved my life 23 years ago, and now that I'm riding again I still believe in it. It is currently 96 degrees outside and I'm about to gear up for my commute home, and I will be using all of my gear. My philosophy is that if it's too hot to wear all my gear then it's too hot to ride. Just my two cents.
Happy Riding!

I wish I had been wiser but 33 years ago I wore none of the gear and went down and paid the price for it. As I have aged and became wiser I have acquired more of the gear over the years. I just got asked by a young rider the other day why I was wearing a jacket in 85 degree weather. I told him it was a mesh jacket and it provided protection and actually cooler while riding (and moving) in the heat. He was in jeans, a T-shirt, tennis shoes and a half helmet with no gloves.

From her video (about 1:33) - 1 Sturdy over-the-ankle boots 2 Long abrasion resistant pants3 Abrasion resistant jacket with armor 4 Full fingered gloves with padding 5 DOT approved helmet 6 eye protection I'd say she was AGATT!

When I got my Motoport pants, I got the tour with Wayne, the owner. He said that in his research he found that the legs tend to get the first impact. Not particularly surprising.

Actually, it was stated after the books and before jacket, but the pants were not specifically shown like the jacket. It was #2 on the list and was shown at the bottom of the screen... right where the control buttons were at the time I watched. DOH!

I been working on getting the right pants to wear. I got a close out at only $70 plus shipping on a pair of FirstGear Mesh Tex 2.0 Pants. My problem is my short legs 28 inseam. The pants fit great other than the length. The pants I got are 32 inseam but I got a gal that does sewing. She is going to rework them for me for $15.
I hope i can wear them in the heat of the summer. I got the FirstGear jacket and love it with only a tee shirt under it.
I got caught is the start of a rain storm and about got blown off of the scooter coming back for her place. The wind felt like 40-50 mph I went from 55 mph down to 30 and still felt unsafe. I was thinking the pants would be nice at that point.

What she should have done is slap him across the back of the head and told him to slow down. You don't ride like that when taking someone for a ride on your bike. It's one thing to hurt yourself, it's not ok to put someone else in danger. ATGATT is fine, but it still doesn't cure stupidity.

+1 I also don't think I have ever seen a crotch rock that has enough room for someone to ride safely on the rear no matter how much ATGATT gear they have on.

The rider didn't get it. She fell off the back. Unfortunate decisions made by both the rider and the passenger.

In the original version of her testimony that I read a couple years ago, she worded it slightly different. The wind force literally pulled her off. She didn't mention the speed at the time, but you could guess. With the way these bikes accelerate, it would only take seconds anyway to get to that speed.
I think her main point is just to think first and wear full gear.
A thought came to me just now of when I had my daughter on the back heading west on Hwy 2. The winds had picked up dramatically through that stretch we were on. My speed was only about 50-60 mph, but she was in danger of being pulled off from the wind force. On that road with all the traffic it gets, she'd be lucky to have lived. I couldn't tell from where she was, that she was having a problem hanging on either. She couldn't let go to tap me on the shoulder to get me to slow down because that would've been enough to have been pulled off.
I don't think any of us plan on having an accident, or having a loved one get in one. But at least if we do, hopefully we're wearing ATGATT to walk away from the accident if it does happen.

She should have moved her hands from a braced position on the tank to a more secure position behind the tank between his legs. Then grab whatever sticks out far enough to provide a secure grip and squeeze as hard as possible until he slows down. Which shouldn't take long. Claude

Some have mentioned above that leg protection is very important because some studies have show that leg injuries are more prevalent than other injuries in motorcycle accidents.
I'd like to add that boots, when riding a bike, really need to be more than just over-the-ankle. I regularly were BMW 14" high boots made by Sidi. I had bought a pair of over-the-ankle Icon Patrol boots last spring and was wearing them when I was struck by a car and broke my leg. The break was right at the boot top. It was just like many skiing injuries that involve boot-top fractures. Maybe it was just a coincidence, but I never wear short boots now. Yes, they can be warm on hot days, but I think that the extra protection is worth it.
I've also upgraded my knee and hip armor to the newer dynamic type that's more comfortable when riding, but hardens on impact and spreads out the impact forces better tan standard CE or simple foam padding/armor.

I had a low speed lay-down and the break was right at the boot top also. The Dr. at the hospital told me it was one most common breaks in mc injuries. Just saying?

If I gave the impression I stopped wearing boots that is NOT what I meant. I would not ride without them.

I was Facebook friends with someone who rode in Pennsylvania. She and her husband believe helmets prevent you from seeing and hearing and are therefore dangerous The jackets and gloves are just too hot. They were in a minor low speed accident in a group ride and both were pretty banged up and she had to undergo physical therapy. Then a couple they knew were killed when they lost control on an on rampand went off the road. I tried to delicately suggest that some helmets might have saved their lives. I was immediately unfriended.
