Wash your Hi-vis!

Postby Bluebottle » Mon Jun 18, 2012 15:47 15

Rolling up to a city centre stop light I saw a flash out of the corner of my eye. I had a quick glance to make sure it wasn't going to be a danger to me and found I was staring at my reflection in a shop window  (don't think anybody caught me)

Then I noticed my hi-vis was really obvious and stood out a mile, the guy in front had a vest on but I could barely see his.

When I looked his vest was not filthy, it was barely grubby, just "ridden a while" but it wasn't loud anymore. Mine hurts your eyes up close because it is my airbag vest and I maintain it and wash it regularly.

Now I know not everybody is keen on Hi-vis but if you are going to wear it, you might be amazed at the difference washing or renewing it can make.

I washed my riding gear last April when I knew I'd be out for a couple weeks. The water turned a dark brown.

Strange timing for this post as I just did mine last week. After I read the instructions on what not to do when washing it I just put it in the bathtub & let it soak overnight. It not only turned the water dark but there was what looked like quite a bit of sand on the bottom of the tub.

I must be extra lazy...for a good cleaning of my safety vest,
I just wore it in the shower, & gave it a good soaping-down
& a through rinse....then I soaped ME down....( no more story )
It is well with my soul.

I don't have hi-vis wear, but I do wash my gloves, jacket and pants every once in a while.

That is for my benefit rather than that of the public. :)

Ahhhm,

Don't forget your helmet liner. Not visible but scented for sure.

Freaky, I cleaned my liner yesterday, how do we all get the same idea at once.

Well I guess I had better do the mesh jacket too.

I washed my helmet liner 2 days ago and my jacket (with leather shoulders) just today. I used a mild solution of Joy dish washing liquid this time and had better results than with an expensive shampoo. I like the lemon scent too.
The temperature today was 97 deg. and the still damp helmet liner was able to wick away the heat as air passed over it, keeping my noggin very cool. OK, this isn't a thread highjacking; washing my jacket brightened the reflective bands affording greater visibility at night. :D Sort of :?

I wash my gear once a year whether it needs it or not but I wash my bike several times a month.
Hmmmm.....now that I think of it...something just seems wrong with that.
