Better than a door opening is when a window opens and a hand comes out and the guy is stretching..i say guy as its invariably a guy! When lane filtering i not only watch the gap but also movement in the car and my hand hovers by the brake lever....i cant afford to buy a bike with ABS :cry:

But im glad your alive ..but i will kick ass with some of the push bikers who whizz past and cause you to brake as they burst out in front oh you!

Anyway, the purpose of the video posting was to address the idea of training vs. ABS (or TCB) as a so-called "crutch".

When one sees what 1.0 to 1.25 seconds of reaction time really looks like (even at slow speed), it's hard to knock ABS or TCB as useful addition to help keep you upright.

As for the "cannot skid the tires" at whatever speed idea, it's more a function of coefficient of friction, not a particular speed. No sand, ice or ball bearings needed when oil on the road is involved.

I just recently watched my Burgie spin round and round on its side in front of me (on my arse) when I hit a patch of oil turning at a traffic light doing 5 MPH.

p.s. Did anybody see the (impending danger) clue of the open trunk lid on the taxi?

I've had a similar 'off' on tarmac at less than 2mph. ABS was no use to me then. I teach kids in car maintenance and valeting is one of the units we do (http://www.pitstop.org.uk). I got one of them to clean and polish my Honda SH300i. My fault - I just said "Do the same on this as you do on my car".

Now, on a car, we put 'tyre silk' on the tyre sidewalls to give them a freshen up. It's a bit like silicon. He covered the whole tyre - front and rear including the tread. I failed to notice it - I just thought the tyres were wet where he'd washed them. Anyway, I jumped on my scoot, pulled out of the workshop, turned right and WHOOOOSH!, I was straight off. Like Bambi on ice I was. Oh how the whole class laughed. Silently!

Apart from buggering up the whole side of my bike and smashing the screen, I sustained my worse bike related injury to date. I would have been sicker if it was my new Burgman though!

Heres the result - 1 knee and 1 elbow. :oops:

There was a interesting thing in a bike mag here in the UK were they had several riders brake
as hard as the could on a bike with switchable ABS most could equal the ABS but one rider beat
it every time by a long way, they were told to brake as hard as possible without being told
if the system was armed or not. I have ridden a few bikes with it but never braked hard enough
to activate it, and have never owned a bike with it, I have had 3 cars with it 2 were ok but the
one I have now activates much too soon, problem is when it activates I tend to back off the brakes,
were that is the normal reaction to a locked brake, I suspect the best stopping distance at least
with a car is to hit the brakes hard to activate the ABS and keep the pressure on to let the ABS
sort it out, something I find hard to do.

Greetings Steve from the US. I just purchased a new Burgman 2011 Executive and will be picking it up shortly. It has the ABS system. I've heard pros & cons about them. I've owned a 400 Burgman in the past without the ABS system. Anyway, I'm trying to sell my current JCL 257cc "Cheap" Chinese scoot. It has "supposedly" an ABS system. Nothing more than a pressure valve that prevents me from really clamping down on the brakes. Now to it's credit.. I was riding in my allotment last Summer. A car in front of me decides to just stop in the road. Well, I proceeded to pass the car and I'll be damn if he did not pull left in front of me.. I was doing the posted 25mph. Well, I clamped down hard and that cheap Chinese scoot performed wonderfully!!! Stopped on a dime and no skid. After a few four letter words I moved on. So, it earned what little respect I have for it. I hope to find a good home for it.

I've had it kick in at about 70mph when a semi lost it in front of me on I-95...and I do mean lost it...jacknife, on the side, sliding....the only thing missing was fire!. I consider myself a good experienced rider...but not an expert. I was glad it was there, stopped fast and straight.
