I dare ask--- an oil question

so I bought Yamalube 20w-50 for my AN400 (you save a little by the gallon)

The OM says use 10w-40 in the final drive box.

If I use 20w-50 in the engine, can I use it in the FD as well? Or stick with 10w-40. No big deal either way.

The Schofield Kid: Yeah, well, I guess they had it coming.
Will Munny: We all got it coming, kid.

I have worked a lot on this engine, from my experience i suggest not to use higher oil grad more than 10W-40, and to change the oil more often than the factory recommendation.
John Holbrook likes this.

Learning patience.

Yes you can DARE to ask, No Problem at all. Your question is about the Final Drive Lubricant viscosity. I have used the 10W-40 in mine, but I know some guys down here that used 75W-90 Gear Lube in their FD with no problem, but that is down here in FLORIDA where is doesn't get below freezing. I would say to stick with the 10W-40 anywhere up north of Tampa Florida, Down here where it stays warm all the time, I could go with heavier lube oil. If I was not selling my 400 soon, I would probably put some 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube in the FD.

Thanks, I live on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay, so we are coming into the Death-by Heat part of the year, similar to FL. When "winter" comes, I will switch to 10w-40 again.

I think 20w50 would be fine as long as it's also JASO MA or MA2

LOL, Winter! That's a joke around here! WHAT winter! lol, If it gets down to 65 degrees, I call that winter!

Hey, since you are right there on the east side of Mobile Bay, you're not far from that great spring party, The Flora-Bama Mullet Toss at the Alabama-Florida State line on the Beach. That is coming up soon, occurs last full weekend of April, This year it's on the 28th, 29th & 30th. Fish Toss occurs at noon or whenever they sober up enough to toss it! Be there or be square! I'll be looking for you. I'll be the one cruising around on the white B650 in black shirt and blue jeans.

I know, I know. I'm going to miss it. The 400 is "enough", but I found myself wanting more, but it comes at a price. The darn 650 fell over in some soft sand beside the road the other day. The side stand sank or folded up, I don't know which. I was halfway sitting on it when it fell over on my foot and busted my shoe and my foot is black and blue. There was no way I could pick that thing up. Luckily there were two guys there that helped me upright it. Yeah, that 650 is a little bit of a beast if it gets off balance, but it feels nice to give it the gas. Most often I ride it in manual gears, just to wind it out more nicely. I would love to have kept the 400, but can't afford insurance and upkeep on two bikes, and wife wants no part of them, has no interest in riding one, not much interest riding behind me. I've got the used throttle body from ebay sitting behind me, ready to go on the 400, to hopefully get rid of that C28 DTC. I'll throw the new belt on it, clean it up and kiss it goodbye.
Cheers!

I use Yamalube in mine, but mine is 10/40
I got scared with the Shell Rotella and switched back to Yamalube.

Nothing wrong with Yamalube. Yamalube is one of the great wonders of the motorcycling world!
