It is interesting that weight is giving as a big reason to use a lithium battery.

My TMAX has a DRY weight of about 440 lbs (a B650 is a lot more). A lead battery is maybe 5. Even if a lithium battery weighed NOTHING, we're talking about 1% of the bike's weight (less on a B650). If you include the weight of my fat ass sitting on the bike, it's a lot less than that!

What kind of riding are you doing where that weight difference actually matters?

On a related note - the poll options are inadequate. It needs an option for "so I don't have to keep it on a tender all the time".

You had a Li ION in your bike and it melted down?
I assume you weren't hurt, was it a passive just bubbling away or did you damage the bike?
Was the bike running or did it just start popping spontaneously?

Slightly off topic but has anyone experimented with the Super / Ultra Capacitors that are available now and do away with a battery as such ? ? Clips on YouTube of genuine tinkerers testing such setups to start cars, indicate its a feasible method of starting....... if your bike is a good starter in the 1st place I guess ?

No.

Why "experiment" and fool around rather than buying purpose-designed, engineered and tested product that is available at a very reasonable price?

I've never tried supercapicitors to start bikes but:

You would never have to replace them, they would easily last the lifetime of the bike.
There are no shelf-life, depth of cycle or number of cycles or maintenance concerns.

I find it interesting that all the choices are all negative. I'm not going to get one but what if you paid the money and thought they were the best thing since sliced bread? This survey isn't for you.

3 years and counting for my Shorai in tropical Australia.

Even sitting for months the bike starts instantly. I would have gone through 3 stndard batteries in that time. I think they are ideal for hot/humid climates.
