Ironically a head-on crash test with an 80's bus (vanagon) showed that it was actually pretty safe if you ran into something shorter than you.
The way the frame works on those it pretty much sledded over the top of the hood, slightly crumpling the foot are but really just a rumple (there's a spare tire down there to take impact).
It then proceeded over the top of the hood of the over vehicle and sliced the heads off the dummies therein while taking out the passenger compartment.
Tough to say but after you pried 'em apart it's possible the van may have been drive-able, or a relatively easy fix.
