Since you have a 650, you need to use an oil that is compatible with a wet clutch or you can end up with a slipping clutch. The safest bet is to look to see that it is JASO MA compliant. Most motorcycle specific oils are and some other oils like Rotella diesel oil are also. I run Rotella 15W-40 in both my 650 and my 400. Many automobile oils contain energy conserving additives that will harm a wet clutch. Those sometimes have an energy conserving decal on them but not always.
The engine and transmission on the 650 both use normal motor oil. The final drive uses hypoid gear oil. The manual calls for straight 90 weight but that is hard to find anymore. I use 75W-90.
I dont understand. In most scooters you have engine oil and CVT oil, but what u r saying above is that the burgman 650 is like a typical motorcycle that uses same engine oil to lubricate the engine and the transmission, how come while in the manual they said to use engine oil for the engine and CVT oil for the transmission? and if both compartments have access to each other than how come these 2 types of oil mix together?
Welcome to the forum. I don't have a 650 but I usually go by the recommendations in the owners manual for most of my scooters. If you bought the bike used and didn't get an owners manual I would just buy the service manual. Even if you have the owners manual I would still get a service manual.
If it is overfilled it's not really going to hurt anything other than causing excess drag which might cost you a little gas mileage. If you are worried about it then it is a simple matter to remove the overflow plug, let the excess drain out then put the plug back in. I would suspect you mechanic did exactly that but can't say for sure as I was not there when he filled it.
That is normal procedure when you fill the transmission. You remove the overflow plug then fill it until oil runs out the overflow hole. The same procedure is used when you fill the final drive with gear oil.
Actually I think he over filled it because he asked his assistant to lean the scooter on its right side and he just put the oil without measuring the amount he put.
May be he did that because the bottle neck is short, i dont know
Well he might have over filled it that way and he might not have. There are three plugs on the transmission. The drain plug on the bottom. The fill plug at the top. And the overflow plug part way up.
If he did not have the overflow plug out and he filled it that way from the fill hole then he could have over filled it. If he had the overflow plug out and he set the bike back up straight before he put it back in then any excess oil should have drained out the overflow hole. Even if he had the overflow plug out and he did not set the bike back up straight before putting the plug in then it could be over filled.
My next question is where was the hole he was filling it from. If it was at the back of the bike by the center of the rear wheel you were seeing him put lube into the final drive, not the transmission. He should have been putting gear oil in there not engine oil. There are only two plugs on it. You drain it from the bottom plug and fill it from the top plug. You should fill it until lube runs out the fill hole with the bike upright.
If it was in front of the rear wheel then it was the transmission and he should have been putting engine oil in there. It has the three plugs. You can fill it from either the fill plug or the overflow plug. It really does not matter as long as the overflow plug is out when it is being filled. It should be filled until the oil runs out with the bike held upright.
he filled the transmission and the final drive, i can clearly understand what u r saying because i have seen couple of videos for it. when he filled each of them he did the leaning things with his assistant, so i guess he might have overfilled both.
so lets assume he did over fill both, what u mentioned before is not to worry a lot, correct?
