Re: 50 Ways to Save Your Life

Printed this and put in glove box since I am new to burgie. It only takes a few moments to go over the list before I even start the bike. The big one for me in the class was looking to where you want to go. I kept looking down at the small orange any green cones. After remedial training I finally passed my test and grateful for any tips. Awesome post. Thanks a million. These can save lives. Hopefully people will read and learn Including me...

Re: 50 Ways to Save Your Life

I think this should be a sticky post at the top of the list. It's spring and a gentle reminder does me good. I got about 5 items in and said "I know this stuff" but made myself finish the list. Yep, things I forgot and things I didn't know were on here. I'm glad I re-read it.

Re: 50 Ways to Save Your Life

I too am a newbe. New 2012 Burgman 400 and new to riding in general. I read and will re-read these 50 tips often. Some I have heard already, a couple I have already experienced but I thank all of the experienced riders that share their knowledge with us new to riding. I will pass these tips along to the other riders in my department as they can (and most likely will) be life savers.

Re: 50 Ways to Save Your Life

Here's one I don't think has been published yet, but I was just "re-introduced" to May 15th...

Pothole, dear/squirrel/"WTH Was That?" guts, or as in the case this week, tractor trailer re-tread where you can't safely swerve to avoid it... Don't Brake, ACCELERATE!!!

May sound crazy, but accelerating (or even maintaining speed) and keeping your balance steady can mean the difference between your head and the pavement! If you hit the brake, you almost always will go down if the obstruction is significant enough. You may blow your tire by accelerating over a pothole, but stay balanced and you'll have time afterwards to pull over and check the bike out. Better your tire than your skull. Same thing with animal guts. Better on your tires than your's joining their's.

As a safety-frantic, I am relieved to read this and know I am already practicing these already. Very beneficial to take a MSF course in the first place! And also it is nice to pick an empty parking lot, imagine all the dangers and keep your safety skills sharp.
