Re: location

Admins: unless a member is in witness protection, location info should be mandatory. Hometown too personal? How about your State. Still too revealing? What about your region like 'East of the Mississippi' or 'Central Time Zone'. Country? Continent?

At the very least, a member's home planet should be required. I'm quite sure there are couple Aliens among us.

Nothing should be required, since answers will not be verified anyway.

If someone wants you to know, they will tell you. For example, I currently live in the STD infected groin area known as Pittsburgh (;

More information may come, once they trust the site. It could be a targeted ad issue or privacy in general.

I lie about my location, education and age on facebook, and block as much info as possible. My friends know who I am, the advertisers and snoopers don't need to know.

Privacy is becoming a precious commodity, and like personal time, I protect it.

Yes Jim, privacy is needed, but as others have brought out, how does city, state or country compromise that? Wouldn't it help in their search for answers to things about the bike (sales, parts, models, repair centers) that are different from region to region. And as noted earlier, many here give out information that could be considered far mar more sensitive than general city location, like their birth year right inside their username or by participating in one of our age polls, etc.

And then there is the courtesy point brought up about a decent polite introduction versus starting membership with a problem question.

Anyway, again the initial post by me reiterated that while it should never be obligatory, it would be nice if the membership sign up software would "prompt" or strongly encourage one to fill out a profile. Without that, there may be some who, actually might be inclined to do so, but just didn't think about it, not necessarily omitting the details on any principle. Have some prompts or encouragement in the process and you might have some extra who would gladly comply. While we shouldn't know everyone's business, more details when you meet someone new adds to further group solidarity, doesn't it?

I can go with that, as long it's not a requirement.

I have never been to a business, association or other meeting where I did not have to present myself and normally state where I am from, or region I am in or represent etc., I believe it to be a very normal and minimal courtesy in anything, if you come here to get information, knowledge or participate I believe it to be very normal to fill in your profile and add some information on your location or area as well as add the year and model of your bike.

You should not be able to post until your profile is filled in.

Big difference between any kind of formal meeting and an Internet forum.

Besides which, if you're not going to verify the info being entered, what is the point of requiring it? Want to take a guess about the percentage of real email addresses news sites acquire when they require people to enter their email address to read an article?

I think if it's too difficult for new members to post, we'll find fewer new members coming in. I think the way we handle it now ... first responders welcome and encourage the new poster to fill in the profile ... is about as good as it gets in an online community.

That said, I agree it was worth having this discussion.
