Primary pulley bolt

I know this subject has been beaten to death but I have to ask. I have a 2012 650 with 7500 miles on it at my mechanic having it serviced. I told him to check the bolt. He said it DID have wear on it (with only 7,500 miles on the odometer) and tried to find the part number on his computer so he could order a new one. He can't find a part number for the 2012 model. I know it's different from earlier models. Being black and longer. This is not something I need right away as the bolt is still usable. My mechanic used to be the manager of the Suzuki dealership in Sarasota FL. and is well aware of the problem. In fact he has a destroyed 650 engine in his shop that had the same problem. Any help with a part number and where you found it will be appreciated.

Re: Primary pulley bolt

I pulled my stopper bolt about a week ago and it looked new, no scaring or nicks of any kind. As you can see I have over 16k on 2011 and it looks like the bolt will hold up for many more miles.

I received one last June when I reworked a friend's CVT and had to replace the primary assembly. It came with the primary as a kit. Several members have ordered the new bolt with that number as well. The bolt is item #10 in the following link:

Re: Primary pulley bolt

Why does this problem persist ?

Seems like Suzuki should have done something about this since it is a re-occuring issue

Because wear on a bolt is preferable to wear on the $700 primary assembly I would hope. The problem is movement of the primary during shifting. I'm not sure you could prevent it totally and wear hopefully on a $6 bolt beats wearing out a $700 primary.

Re: Primary pulley bolt

Hmm ??

I wonder if it is something i should replace every year or at specific mileages.
I have read some posts here that people experience almost no problems with it and others seem to show wear frequently on the bolt .

I was hoping when i bought this machine it would last a long time, but my confidence reading all these problems with a $6.00 bolt, drive pulleys, belts , and such make me question my buying decision.

I rode my Triumph for almost 40k miles and never experienced any issues , my HD and BMW's the same.
I am thinking i should have bought the Honda 700 NX or what ever they call it now.

Re: Primary pulley bolt

If your expectation is a bike that will go 40,000 miles before you trade it in then you will likely not be disappointed by the 650. Most folks ride them that far and do nothing but normal routine maintenance. A few have had problems before that mileage but they are not common.
