In the 6 years I have been on this board this is the first thread I have started. After 44700 trouble free, wonderful miles next week my extended warranty runs out on my 11 650. Last weekend I started hearing a tiny chirp when I take off from a stop. I am trying to decide if I am being a hypochondriac, or if I need to run to the local dealer for the first time. I am mechanical enough to tear the thing apart my self, I just want too think there is a problem with my baby.
It really all depends on what is causing the squeak. It could be a nothing or a harbinger of something expensive to fix. You spent that money on a extended warranty that you never used. If it will cover looking into what is causing the squeak maybe you should cash in on it before it expires. At least maybe get the problem documented with the dealer so that if it does later develop into something expensive you might still be able to get the warranty to cover it.
I would suggest check for loose screws, Specially front fender and check seat make sure rubber grommets are in place and that all is lubricated properly. Another place to look is the dash and fairing check all screws is the best recordation. For what you are saying when you accelerate you hear the squeak so I 'm thinking for places that are more affected with torque. But this may help or not. Squeaks sometimes are very hard to locate. A mechanic in a shop will charge by the hour and do same I just suggested but take his time, he is on your dime and no guarantee he will find it either.
If I remember correctly MJR said that he had heard a chirping noise shortly before one of his CVT's went out , and that he thought in retrospect it was attributed to the CVT . So like Buffalo said it would be a good idea to get it documented at the dealer .
Or you could take it out and drive the ever lovin snot out of it and push it over the edge before your warranty expires . :devil
Taking it to the dealer tomorrow, not only does it turn out to be the last day of the extended warranty, but on the ride home from work today, once taking off from the light it acted like a slipping clutch.
Clutches have been known to go around 50,000 miles so depending on how you drive it might very well be the clutch . Hopefully it is the clutch because it is not a big deal major kind of repair . Your trip to the dealer on the last day of your warranty should prove interesting ?
Yep, and if it is the clutch you will probably find out that it is not covered by E/W. But at least you will have peace of mind. You may be able to extend your E/W by another year also.
This is MJR's post on the "chirping sound" . TheReaper!
Re: Primary Spline Failures
It can affect all 2003-04 models. The key in saving some money is the problem doesn't come without warning. It will start with a chirping noise which can be heard idling without a helmet on. If you hear it stop riding it and get it fixed. I'd probably suggest replacing the primary CVT pulley/shaft assembly anyway as I suspect the new replacement one (fits '03-09) has better heat treating on the shaft splines (just a guess). It can be expensive as herbeckg said. At minimum if you can do the work yourself it will be about $500-1,000 in parts.
Will this be the first reported '11 w/ CVT issues? It is all a guess anyway until he takes it in and has it looked at. Has there been any reports of an EW paying for a CVT?
Yesterday night I checked the transmission & found it low by 4 oz. / 120 ml. rode to & from work with no issues or sound no matter how I took off. I found no leaks on my scooter so wondering If I miss filled the Trans on the last change 2000 miles ago. I called the insurance company today they are closed for Good Friday. At this point I am riding it until it dies and rebuilding the trans or clutch my self. I will probably go ahead and change the trans fluid this weekend.
I doubt you did any significant damage to it. If the bearings had run dry you would have known pretty quickly. With it only being 4 oz low I would suspect that plenty of lubricant was being thrown up on the bearings.
We went for a 2 hour ride and yes there is a problem. 2 times the I had run away RPM's, 4 times the bike acted as though it was bogging down as though not down shifting.
If anybody want s to post threads that I will find helpful I would appreciate it. I now Im nit the first down this road.
The PPS is easy to check. The problem seems to have started with a low oil situation I am going to start by checking the clutch. I notice in the diagram there is a filter I will also look for this so i can check this once I get the clutch cover off. What can I check to see if oil has migrated to places it should not be?
That is interesting, in watching Le Dudes video on clutch service it says to drain the oil, I assumed it was the transmission oil. As I understand the diagram the low oil should not have any effect of how the bike shifts. I am not having any other new noises that I would normally associate with worn or bad bearings in a gear reduction.
EW said it will not be covered already. I am moving ahead so I can be riding again, it was what I expected. I am not sweating it the EW it came with the scooter when I bought it from the previous owner. If it is the clutch it would not be covered anyway.
If any one needs a clutch I have a complete one that I pulled out of a 3600 mile motor . When I pulled it I put it in a bucket of fresh motorcycle oil . Let me know in a PM .
My parts got here today, tomorrow I should know if this does the trick. I'm doing my I got the parts dance.
