Cool WA - HB1157 Lane Splitting 2017

Caught this in another forum or two tonight.
Looks like another run at lane splitting this year.
http://app.leg.wa.gov/billsummary?Bi...1157&Year=2017

Call, email or otherwise harass your legislator if they're the least bit receptive. (Sadly mine vary from vehemently opposed to "What's in it for me")
You can find 'em here http://app.leg.wa.gov/DistrictFinder/

Cheers

for me, I'm opposed to driving between vehicles. It's too dangerous. And rude to boot, in my opinion. Also, saw this part: "The legislature intends with this act to provide new options to save lives by giving operators of motorcycles a way to legally avoid being rear-ended by
other vehicles.
" Bikes already have that option when they see an accident about to happen. All vehicles do.

This proposal would also ban riding side-by-side. This proposal would also allow passing a vehicle in the same lane as the vehicle being passed. How dangerous can one be??!?!

Respectfully, I disagree. Where is the data that shows lane splitting or filtering is dangerous? I do it regularly in busy southern California traffic and feel safer than I do sitting in stop and go traffic. Most car drivers here seem to be used to us splitting on bikes, and many many of them move over to give us even more room as we go by.

Two of my dislikes however are really loud bikes that startle people as they pass, and high speed lane splitters. There will always be the outliers that spoil it for the rest.

Get out of California and you will find plenty of examples.

Lane splitting here a no no

Here, El Jefe, you would provoke anger, resentment and hostility. Maybe even a little road rage. Nobody's going to pull out a gun and shoot you, we're not allowed to have guns, but they might squeeze you out or cut you off. The concept would require a public relations info and education campaign to get it going here if they were to legalize it.

Let me ride 'til I croak.

I pray every day for Lane Splitting to be legalized here in Florida. Boy do we need it! And as to the comment about being rear ended, if somebody is coming up behind you at high speed with their brakes squealing, you are for sure going to move out of their way! I know for a fact, because that is what I did one day on 49th St Northbound in Pinellas Park Fl a couple of months back. I stopped at a red light in fairly heavy traffic, in the left lane, at the front of the line, other cars to the right of me, when a Big Black Pickup Truck comes blasting up behind me with brakes squalling. No time to look, i instantly gunned it, and shot to the right in front of the truck that was stopped on the right side of me. The Big Black Truck just barely missed me, because I had moved quick out of the way. I was on my 400 riding 2 up. It was so good having those 16 gram sliders in my CVT, they really helped! So I split that lane mighty quick and saved me and my passenger a lot of pain and misery. So you will split when you need to, believe me.
If you want to see how nice lane splitting can be, just watch some of M13's You Tube videos of Taiwan Scooterist riding between the cars and you will see what I mean.

Get out of North America and you will find a plethora of examples of lane splitting done regularly and safely. The whole rest of the world does it without major incident, as does California. Major studies in CA and Europe find it is perfectly safe. I've yet to see a study where it is more dangerous.

Any driver who purposely cuts off a rider, even if lane splitting is illegal in that state, is a vigilante. Drivers do NOT have the right to endanger rider's lives, even if the rider is breaking the law.

I live in a very large city of 3500 people, lol, so I have no need for it. I believe you but I just can't wrap my head around it being safer.

There are many vigilantes just looking for renegades to cut off. I see very few oldsters splitting lanes, mostly they are young riders not afraid to die.

When I was in the Old Army, we had new soldiers that would get hurt trying to buck the chow line. They could not understand why others would not let them go ahead of those waiting in line. It had something to do with defending territory against intruders.

Old Burgman riders never die..they just fade away.

Home to that place that we all will someday stay.

And that is my epitaph....
